The Myths, Law and Language of the Tel'Quessir
by Tyler Smith PHD.
by Tyler Smith PHD.
Thirty Years ago I stumbled upon a secret that was to change my life and the history of magic in Australia forever...
They call themselves the Tel'Quessir, a race of Elven People who have managed to live and keep the traditional law and culture of the Elven race alive, hidden in a remote valley in the north of Queensland I discovered their home by accident and through love came to learn their ways and language which as you will see matches all of the very earliest known research into elven linguistics. Indeed it is a shock that while the world has moved on, many elven people who I have shown this book to scarcely manage to remember or recognize their own heritage! I hope that by publishing the notes and studies I was able to make in the years that I was amongst them it will help other's to understand this proud and ancient race.
Most of all I'd like to thank the tireless efforts of The Grey Company for their support and funding for which this research would not have seen the light of day.

Agar: Blood
Agaryulnaer Agar: Vampire Blood
Agaryulnaer: Blood Sucker literally : Vampire
Agaryulnaerea: Blood Suckers : Vampires
Use: Elves have a racial hatred of Vampires. Being that Elves are beings that uphold nature as the highest law, anything unnatural especially involving death and being undead is utterly repulsive to a Elven.
Aiya: Earth in terms of The Planet
Keen: Earth in terms of dirt, soil, mud etc.
Use: one of the most common words in the Elven Language, Aiya means both Earth as in the Planet and Nature itself. Due to the way Elven people think in terms of everything being a mixture of Fire, Earth, Water, Wind and 'Corm' they will often use Earth to mean 'from the earth' or 'of the earth' meaning that it has grown or been made of earth at some point. This is also tied in with their creation mythology that all beings where made of earth that was then sculpted by wind and water, hardened by fire before having 'Corm' (which is the element of magic and life) breathed into them. Not to be mistaken for Keen which is Earth in the lesser sense of dirt, sand, mud etc.
Alta Templa: Large Magic
Alumallen: Circle of Water
Use: Large Magic is a term for spells that require two or more people in order to cast, often it is used as a learning tool for young Elven children in order to learn the more powerful spells that they will one day perform. It is also used to perform feats of high level magic that would otherwise be too taxing to be performed safely.
One of the most basic of the spells is in the use of circle magic that requires a group of people to form a circle and focus on a specific goal. For example Alumallem is a circle to control water within the space of the circle. How effective the spell is depends not only on the leader of the circle but on each member within focus to the task at hand.
Alu: Water
Use: Alu is one of the five core elements that make up the grounds of Elven lore and belif. Due to the way Elven people think in terms of everything being a mixture of Fire, Earth, Water, Wind and 'Corm' they will often use Water to mean 'from water' or 'to be with water' meaning that it has been collected from or lives in water. This is also tied in with their creation mythology that all beings where made of earth that was then sculpted by wind and water, hardened by fire before having 'Corm' (which is the element of magic and life) breathed into them.
Apsa: Food
Motto: Blight
Use: Relates to Food's Elven People can eat. Full Blood Elven People are sensitive to metals and artificial additives found in most modern foods and so rely on Organic Produce. They are also Vegan due to their beliefs in not harming other's (See Corm)
If a Elven person consumes processed to higher concentration of processed food they are stuck by Motto.. roughly 'The Blight' which wastes away their magic, then their energy and functioning till they are left in a coma induced state. Depending on the purity of the Elven blood this could be anything from years worth of eating Human food to a single McDonalds Meal. Half Elves may or may not be effected depending on their heritage and power.
Elves who consume meat, processed foods and animal products will in time build up a immunity to the physical sickness effects, however their magic and lifespan will be little more then your average human wizard. Also as they are considered to be 'impure' and 'Blight Touched' they may not be as respected to pure elves and could be excluded and outcast from their home communities for periods of centuries upwards to forever depending on how long it takes to 'cleanse' their body of the toxins.
Amin: I, Me, My, I am, Mine etc.
Use: One of the most commonly used elven words used in place of I/Me words when relating to the self.
Examples:
Amin Professor Sam Aiya Dil-Ardadil : I am Professor Sam Aiya Dil-Ardadil
Armepalantir Suulina Ehtele' Kaimeler : Far Watcher Windsong Springdreamer (rough translation)
Sam : Pebble
Use: 'First' name of Sam's father, Elven names are descriptive often going back generations to which the first section would be the name of the elf and their title, and the second onwards to the Nth degree that of their forefathers including the great deeds of each. For example in Sam's case:
Alassima Sam Salkfeanor Tinu En Armepalantir Suulina Ehtele' Kaimeler Kiirar Osta Tel'Quessir Oira
Can be broken down to:
Alassima Sam Salkfeanor (Joyful pebble that dances with spirit of fire) is her first name.
Tinu En (daughter of)
Armepalantir Suulina Ehtele' Kaimeler (her fathers name)
Kiirar Osta Tel'Quessir Oira (Elder Lorekeeper and Eternal Defender of the People) which is titles bestowed up her father for deeds during his life.
This would then be followed by her fathers father- fathers father's father.. and onwards to infinity.
Note that because names are belived to hold great power no Elven would ever give out their entire name to someone that was not of their kind. This is why Sam doesn't use her real name (well that and it's so bloody long!)
Corm: Soul/Magic/Life Force
Use: One of the key words in the elven language, Corm is a word that doesn't really have a proper english translation being that it is directly related to the fact that Elves view all things as being at one with magic and so Corm means not only Magic in the sense of spells, but also the life force that could...
Dina: Be Silent
Use: Command, possible insult ala Shut Up!
Diola lle: Thank You
Use: General Thanks.
Earendil: Half Elven
Use: Elven Term for those of 'impure blood' meaning that they either come from half blood or wizards with elven blood inherited from Elven ancestors.
Note that it is impossible for there to be a 'Muggleborn' Elven or 'Squib' as Elven people have magic inbuilt into their very blood. This causes a balance between immense magical power in the case of extremely pure blood where one is extremely vulnerable to Blight (see Food) or lesser blood where the magical ability is lessened but one is able to integrate better into wizard society. A child born of a Human and Elven union will Always be magical and process varying levels of elven traits depending on the purity of their parents blood. Note however that a Half Elven will never be as magically powerful as a full blood Elven.
Ed' i'ear ar' elenea!: By the sea and stars!
Use: A common exclamation of suprise like Merlin's Pants or Bloody Hell
Entula tuulo' i'ba : Ritual of Resurrection
Use: a very rough translation, Entula tuulo' i'ba is a ritual one of elven blood can go though to 'purge' their blood of built up toxins to starve off the blight and avoid their magical ability from being stunted. Though pollution, eating impure foods and general contact with the modern world Elves lose magic, at first it may be barely noticeable.. but over time the buildup causes physical symptoms see Blight and can lead to death over a very long buildup or extremely high levels of pollution.
Normally poisoning takes many months or years for a elven to regenerate naturally however they can preform cleansing rituals such as Entula tuulo' i'ba that purges most of the toxin from their body. Note however that it is no cure, it is not a perfect solution as the rituals are only so effective and leave a percentage of the toxins still in the system causing permanent damage (but far less then if it was untreated) this is why mixed and modern elves will never be as powerful as Wild Elves who are born without the toxins in their environment.
It is also why Wild Elves lose magical ability when they leave their homeland as they start to be exposed to toxins for which they are far more sensitive.
Falmarin: nymph
Use: One of many magical 'sister' species of the Elven People, Nymph's are smaller and wilder then their Elven cousins able to live only within small areas of high magical concentration such as a particular river, tree, sacred grove or valley. Male's are unknown in the species and it is believed that nymphs breed though the capture of human males. This must beg the assumption that all children born of nymphs are by nature always female.
There can be found much literature on the topic of Nymph's in wizard and even Muggle writings
Faradome: Summer Solstice
Use: Being Seasonal people Elves magic is at it's strongest during the summer months after the strong weather pattern changes of spring and the change from the wet season. It's no surprise that Summer also is the time that Cyclones effect the region of Cape York and it is theorised that there is a connection between the tropical storms and a upswell in magical power amongst the elven population.
Gorgaerea: Fearful Ones
Use: Term often applied to Humans. In Elven Mythology the Human's came along many-many generations after that of the Elven People (see Tel'Quessir). Because they where of weak senses and short lives the Elves where pitiful of them them and tried to teach them the ways of their kind. However while some accepted and grew to be wise many others lusted after the power, falling victim to 'Ksherea (see Evil Spirits) and in so brought war upon the Elven People in the aim of wanting the secrets to their long life and magical prowess. It is for this reason that Elves and Humans are distrustful of each other, humans envy the elves and elves are weary of the stories of betrayal from the past.
Hallaer: One Who is Tall Like Tree / Ethan Fitch-Hunter
Hodoer: Wise One / Librarian
Use: Elven people tend to name other's by 'descriptive' terms, ala tall, short, wise, evil, red haired etc.
People who work with books are assumed to be 'Wise Ones' due to the fact that elves have a Oral Culture meaning that much of their knowledge is passed down by songs and stories told by others. Elves are not too keen on books as they distrust information that comes from 'the dead' meaning that there is no-one to speak the stories and decide who is ready to hear. Thus keepers of knowledge are well respected and a position of honour amongst elven people
Hilkin Voronwe: Freeze Solid - Spell
Use: Wind Elemental Magic Spell to Freeze a Object ala Water to Ice.
Istar: Wizard
Use: Refers to both Female and Male Humans with magical blood. The Term is not used for that of other species or Elven People as they consider magic part of their very being thus all Elven People are Wizards by default. Elven People have a natural distrust and consider themselves superior to Wizards who they see as children
'Ksher: Evil One : Evil Spirit
'Ksherea: Evil Ones : Evil Spirits
Use: General Term for dark life force such as that contained in vampires blood
‘Kshonna, wanya: Dispel
Use: Elven Spell/Command to get rid of spells or the effects of something, also a simple command to leave or go away.
laito: Smallest Child
Use: Compared to the lifespan of elven people Humans are often seen as mere infants in terms both of their lifespans and understanding of magic and nature. Sometimes however it can also be used as a term of endearment in terms of being youthful and innocent to the real world.
Laito Templa: Smallest Child's Magic
Use: Refers to the type of magic taught to humans and the fact that the spells taught in Sam's class are usually learnt by young elves at the age of three or four.
LittleFuzzyMan: Marcus Hobson
Use: Not proper elven but the term Sam uses for Marcus Hobson
Lova handasse: Feebleminded
Use: a spell that makes one easily confused, waylead or foolish. Also a insult that one acts as if under such a spell.
If Dispelled the negative influences clouding mind or judgment is removed.
Mae govannen: Well met
Use: A Friendly Greeting
Mani naa ta?: What is it?
Mani nae lle umien?: What Have You Been Doing?
Manke tanya tuula?: Where did that come from?
Use: General questions
Manka lle merna : As You Wish
Use: Polite Phrase for Yes, Ok etc.
Me'urramya: Thunder
Me'urra: Lightning
Use: It is a curious feature of Elven life that unlike humans they seem to take very little interest in matters of weather. Indeed outside of seasonal preparations against the cyclones that effect the north of Queensland Elves are all but complacent in regards to rain and sunshine alike. There is some curious behaviour that could be noted over the years that in many ways Elven People seem to respond quite strongly to the different seasons with a large outpouring of magic in the summer months. Interesting that this time relates exactly to the beginning and end of the cyclone season in Northern Queensland.
Mori'Quessir: Dark Elves : Drow
Use: Legend told of tribe of elves in early times who through folly where lead to shun the light and came to worship the dark (See Evil Spirits), in pursuit of even greater power they came to undermine nature itself by creating horrible creatures who stunk of their wrongness (see Vampire). The Mori'Quessir where cruel just as the Elves themselves where light and threatened to plunge the whole world into darkness where it not for the combined efforts of all Elves who for the first time took up arms to battle them so that peace and light could return to the world.
Nime: White
Eden: Man
Atani: 2nd People : Australian Aboriginal (Being that Elves consider themselves to be of the 1st people)
Edhel: Elf (Informal, General term, non-specific)
Use: White Man is a general term for non-native Australian's not to be mistaken with Atani or Edhel
Nir'Laito manke umtuul: so many Children, where do they come from?
Use: Because of they're long lives Elven people rarely have children, thus they are often surprised or bewildered by the number of human children.
Norsa: Giant
Runya Norsa: Young Giant
Use: Elves and Giants have a 'uneasy' relationship of shared avoidance. Elves don't usually go near Giant's territory and vice versa. However unlike Trolls Elves are not actively at war with Giants and tolerate them as a fellow species.
Piukka: Blackberry
Use: Type of plant, well known as being a serious pest species and weed in Australia.
Pointy Ears: A Human Insult for those of Elven Blood
Use: Not everyone accepts Elves, Some Wizards such as Purests fear and hate people of Elven blood both for their magic and for traits that are often prescribed to Elven people such as lazyness, selfishness, being stuck up or generally on the outer of society. 'Wild' Elves who have not interbred or blended in with wizarding society are considered dangerous for their inherit magical ability, different appearance and uncanny long lives.
It is for this reason that Elven people are considered Creatures by the Ministry of Magic and even S.P.E.W sometimes have trouble trying to deal with cases where Non-House Elves are concerned.
Quel Re: Good Day
Quel Amrun: Good Morning
Quel Andune: Good Afternoon
Quel Undome: Good Evening
Use: Polite Greeting adopted from Humans. Substitute 2nd word for time of day or use Quel Re (Good Day) if unsure.
Ros-Ros ‘Kshonna Wanya, Tulau' n'atuva re : Rain Rain Go Away Come Again Another Day
Use: Elven Translation of a children's song. Sam uses this song in the Class on Water.
Sung as:
Ros-Ros, ‘Kshonna Wanya, Tul-au' n'at uva re
Sul: Air/Wind
Use: One of the Five Elements representing Air, wind and breath Sul is the opposite to Water and closely tied to Fire and Earth
Tanya awra!: That Hurts!
Use: Expression of Surprise/Pain ala 'Ouch!'. While Elven people do heal they do still feel pain from injuries etc. until they are able to focus enough to heal themselves.
Tanya nae n'quel: That Was Not Good
Use: Common Phrase for bad, wrong, oopsie, whaoh! etc.
Tenna' ento lye omenta: Until Next We Meet
Use: Farewell
Tel'Quessir: Elves literally 'The People'
Use: Term Elven people use to relate to their own species, note however that it is a general term that covers all Elven Races. Elves are weary of giving out 'True Names' of themselves or others and so Tel'Quessir is a common misconception to be a specific group of Elven people when it is in fact the term all Elven use to describe their race and home.
Treefriends: Greenies / Environmentalists
Use: Not a elven word but a term Sam uses to apply to 'Greenies' that is humans that talk about and work to protect nature. The 'tree' part of the title refers to dreadlocks that to her makes them look like trees.. see simple enough?
Tul-: Come
Liante: Spider
Use: Basic command Tul- is added onto the name of the item/person/thing etc requested. eg. Tul-Liante in the case of Liante (Spider)
Vara tel' Seldarine: Protection
Use: A 'odd' spell much like the elvish equivalent of Ridiculousus that's used on Boggerts. Vara tel' Seldarine consists of singing a upbeat happy song in order to drive away Evil Spirits and protect one from harm in the case of one with Elven or Magical Blood.
Vedui': Greetings
Vedui' Il'er: Greetings Everyone
Use: A informal Greeting ala Verdui' Students would be Greetings Students.. etc.etc.
Waen: Stained
Use: used both in terms of something physically stained and also to refer to one being impure or 'dirty'. It's a accusation that is often laid on Pureblood Elves that have had contact with humans or non-pure elves that they are 'stained' and no longer pure as a result.
Yaaraerea: Ancient Ones
Use: Respectful term for Elven people of long ago, often featured in legend or myth's passed down of how things used to be. Their stories are told by all Elves as learnings and reminders of how things where and 'should' be.
Yen: Year
Use: Yen refers to a human measurement of one year. Elves however being much longer lived see both day, season and units closer to decades or a hundred years to be more useful measurements of time.
